AV scripts
AV scripts
Use Visual and Audio columns for commercials, explanatory videos, and documentaries. Add images, group rows into segments, and measure runtime.
What an AV script is Link to What an AV script is#
- Visual: what the audience sees, in the left column.
- Audio: voice-over, dialogue, music, and effects, on the right.
- Segment: a group of rows under a heading such as "Cold open".
- Banner: a full-width note, such as a meal break or company move.
You cannot change the script type later. When you create a script, select AV or screenplay.

Select New AV script from the Library, the New script page, or the command palette. The new script contains Segment 1 and one empty row. AV scripts also work in Local Mode.
Keyboard controls Link to Keyboard controls#
Tab moves between cells. AV scripts do not use screenplay element or Format shortcuts.
Columns Link to Columns#
Open Columns above the sheet to show or hide Visual, Audio, and Duration. Start and End are available with frame timing. Keep Visual, Audio, or the two columns visible.
Screencake saves the column selection for this script, account, and device. If you hide Visual, its pictures stay in the script. Keyboard and touch controls move between visible cells. A text search makes the column with the result visible.
Duration and runtime Link to Duration and runtime#
Put the cursor in a row. Open the Row tab in the inspector. Enter seconds or m:ss. If frame timing is on, you can enter a full timecode. To remove the duration, clear the field. Invalid input shows an error and keeps the previous duration.
Timing starts at 24 fps, non-drop-frame, 00:00:00:00. Supported rates are 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94, and 60 fps. Drop-frame is available at 29.97 and 59.94 and uses a semicolon before frames.
- Start accumulates across all segments. End is the boundary where the next row begins.
- An untimed row has no End. Subsequent Start and End values show “—”. The runtime shows the known total and the number of untimed rows.
- A rate change keeps elapsed durations and the starting offset. It rounds each duration to the nearest frame. A positive duration has a minimum of one frame.
- If you hide frame timing, precision stays the same. Row numbers and review status stay in the margin. The inspector shows available timing details.
Writers can change shared timing settings. The app and server must support these settings.
Status Link to Status#
Set Approved, Rewrite, or Hold in the Row tab. The status shows as a gutter dot and syncs with the script, but does not print.
Images in rows Link to Images in rows#
- Click + in a Visual cell, or drop a JPEG, PNG, or WebP onto the row.
- Click a thumbnail to see the full image. Use × to remove it.
- Images are resized on your device and work offline, including in Local Mode.
Cloud images upload when you are online. Until upload completes, collaborators see "Image syncing…". PDFs show pictures above the Visual text. Guest links show pictures without editing controls.
Limits: 10MB per image and 200MB of cloud image storage per script.
Export Link to Export#
Select PDF from the File menu. Select columns for that PDF. The defaults are row number, Visual, Audio, and Duration. Editor column settings do not change these defaults. With frame timing, Start and End are also available. Images show with Visual. Column widths change with your selection. Guest downloads keep their permissions and watermark.
The server creates the PDF. A cloud copy and a connection are necessary for PDF export. Move a Local Mode script to the cloud to export its PDF. AV scripts do not support file import or Final Draft, Fountain, or Word export. See Import & export.
Templates and duplicates Link to Templates and duplicates#
- Duplicate: make a new script with the same rows, timing, and episode numbers.
- Use as template: list this script under Templates in the Library.
- New from template: copy the content and timing with season and episode numbers cleared.
Find Duplicate and Use as template in Script settings. Screenplays can be templates too.
Organize individual episode scripts within a production. See Seasons and episodes.
Unavailable features Link to Unavailable features#
AV scripts have no scenes. Scene cards, beat boards, breakdowns, sides, stripboards, and production reports are unavailable. Comments, version history, sharing, and collaboration stay available.
An AV script cannot be encrypted: its PDF is made on the server, which would have to read it.
