Versions

Version history

Save named versions, compare changes, and restore an earlier version. Version history is available on cloud plans.

Automatic captures Link to Automatic captures#

Screencake captures a version about once an hour when your script has changed. Recent captures are kept more frequently than older ones. Versions you save manually are always kept.

Version history includes named versions and automatic captures.

Save a named version Link to Save a named version#

Select Save a version from the Script menu and give it a name, such as "Studio draft" or "Before the rewrite". It shows in history with a saved marker and word count.

Compare versions Link to Compare versions#

Select a version in Version history to preview its pages. Select What changed since this? to compare it with the current script. Additions show in green. Removed text shows in red with a line through it.

Select By author to identify changes by collaborator color. Deleted text has a line through it in the author color. Imported text, restored text, and text written before author tracking show as Unattributed.

Comparing with a file Link to Comparing with a file#

Select Compare with a file… to compare a Final Draft (.fdx), Fountain, or plain-text draft without importing it.

  • Green: text in the file but not in your current script.
  • Red: text in your current script but not in the file.
  • Swap: reverse the comparison.

The comparison stays until you remove it or close the page. It does not change or save either draft. To use the file as your script, select File → Import.

Restoring Link to Restoring#

Restore replaces current text with the selected version. The previous text stays in history. Comment threads stay, but their highlights do not follow restored text.

The Drafts view Link to The Drafts view#

Open Drafts from History to follow each scene across versions, including renames, renumbering, and moves.

  • See when a scene first appeared, changed, was cut, or returned.
  • Compare any two versions for scenes added, removed, and moved.
  • Examine the word-count difference and which characters gained or lost dialogue.
One row per scene, one column per draft.

Availability Link to Availability#

Version history is available for synced scripts on Writers Room or higher plans. See Sync & offline.

History and Drafts work on desktop, iPad, and the web. A connection is necessary because the server stores versions.

Encrypted scripts Link to Encrypted scripts#

Encrypted versions open on your device. History, comparison with the current draft, and restore stay available. The Drafts view is unavailable because the server cannot read scene data.
