Find text, rename characters, add alternate dialogue, and use reading mode.

Find & replace Link to Find & replace#

  1. Press ⌘F and enter the search text.
  2. Use Enter for the next match, or Shift-Enter for the previous one.
  3. Replace one match or select Replace All.

Matches show as you type. One undo reverses Replace All. Read-only collaborators can search. Writers can also replace text.

The count updates as you type, before you replace anything.

Bold, italic, underline Link to Bold, italic, underline#

Select text and press ⌘B, ⌘I, or ⌘U. You can also use the B/I/U buttons above your selection. Styling carries into PDF, Final Draft, Fountain, and Word exports without changing pagination.

Rename everywhere Link to Rename everywhere#

Open Rename Everywhere with ⌘⇧E, the Format menu, or the command palette. Select a character or location, enter the new name, and examine the count before applying it.

Character renames keep extensions such as (V.O.) and (CONT'D). Location renames keep INT./EXT. and the time of day. Dialogue and action do not change. Examine names in those lines separately.

One undo reverses the complete rename.

Rename everywhere

Examine the number of changes before renaming. Undo them together.

Reading mode Link to Reading mode#

To use reading mode, press ⌘⌥R or select the book icon in the left sidebar. Reading mode is also available in the command palette.

  • Available controls: comments, scene navigation, and table read stay available. Editing tools, including import and scene numbering, are disabled.
  • Character profiles: tap a cue for their profile, speech and word counts, and links to their scenes. This works locally and on encrypted scripts.
  • Layout: select Reflow to fit for text that fits your screen. Printed and exported pages do not change.
  • Navigation: scene links, ⌘K, and ?scene= links work in page and reflow views.

This device saves your mode and layout. Read-only access always opens in reading mode. The switch cannot give editing access.

Outside reading mode, ⌘-click a character cue to edit their profile in the report.

On a touch screen Link to On a touch screen#

On iPhone and iPad, the writing toolbar is above the keyboard.

  • Tap the current element to select a different element, or use next element in place of Tab.
  • Style text, add a comment or alternate line, and undo or redo from the same bar.
  • Hold a grip and drag to reorder beats, cards, scenes, or strips.
  • With an iPad hardware keyboard, use the same ⌘ shortcuts as on Mac.

The layout follows your screen width: a left rail and title bar on wider screens, a compact bar on phones.

Alternate lines Link to Alternate lines#

Alternate lines store different versions of one dialogue block.

  1. Put the cursor in dialogue. Press ⌘⌥A, or select Add Alternate Line in the Lines tab or command palette.
  2. Write the alternate line in the empty block.
  3. Use ⌘⌥] and ⌘⌥[ to switch takes, or select one in the Lines tab.

Adding an alternate saves the previous line before the block becomes empty. A label such as "+2" in the margin identifies alternates. Only the selected line shows in print, exports, and page counts. One undo reverses each line change.
