Outline
Outline and story order
View acts and scenes, assign story threads, and set the sequence of events separately from screenplay order.
The outline Link to The outline#
The outline gathers your acts, sequences, beats, and scenes into one list. It uses the structure you wrote in the script and the same summaries shown on scene cards.
- Click a scene to open it in the editor.
- Edit a row's summary to update the script's summary.
- Drag a scene, or use the arrow keys on its handle, to move it. One undo reverses the move.
Story threads Link to Story threads#
Give each plot line a name and color. Then tag its scenes. Colored dots identify the scenes that contain each story thread.
Edits and scene moves do not remove story threads or story order. Final Draft and Fountain exports do not include this information.
Story order Link to Story order#
A flashback shows later in screenplay order but earlier in the sequence of events. Story order shows this sequence separately.
Select story order. Add labels such as "1962" or "Day 3". Drag scenes into the sequence of events. This does not move screenplay text. Scenes without an assigned position stay in a different list.
The timeline Link to The timeline#
On the pacing page, the timeline plots screenplay order horizontally and story order vertically. Lower points identify flashbacks. Click a point to open its scene.

The outline is free, including in Local Mode. Outline elements and summaries export with the script. For offline details, see Sync & offline.
The tabs show different views of the same script. Select the outline, beat board, scene cards, or pacing.
