Getting started

Create your first script

Write in Local Mode without an account. Select Writers Room for cloud sync and collaboration, or Production for production tools.

1. Get the app Link to 1. Get the app#

Start at the download page. It has the macOS and Linux downloads and links to the Microsoft Store, the App Store, and Google Play.

Without an account, desktop apps open the Library in Local Mode. On iPhone, iPad, and Android, select Use without an account to write in Local Mode. On desktop, open Account and select Sign in — sync & collaborate to sign in.

After sign-in, your local scripts stay in the same Library. With a paid plan, Screencake uploads them to your private workspace automatically and keeps the local copy. Without a paid plan, they stay on your device.

On the web, an account without cloud access shows Download Screencake in the Library. Select this link to get the free app. To write in the browser, you need access to a paid workspace.

Mac apps receive updates automatically. Windows apps receive updates through the Microsoft Store. iPhone, iPad, and Android apps receive updates through the App Store or Google Play. On Mac, select Screencake ▸ Check for Updates… to search for updates. Select About Screencake to see the version. If an update is necessary, the app shows instructions.

On iPhone, iPad, and Android, use the browser inside the app to sign in or create an account. Desktop apps open your default browser. After sign-in, select Continue to Screencake in the browser. The browser then returns you to the app.

On iPhone and iPad, you can subscribe inside the app. Open Account ▸ Plan and select See plans. Apple sells these subscriptions at the displayed price in your currency, including tax. To manage or cancel an Apple subscription, open Settings ▸ Apple Account ▸ Subscriptions. Subscriptions purchased on the web or through Apple work on all supported devices.

For help with a problem, select Help ▸ Report a Bug…. You can include the app version and current page. The report removes identifiers. Before you send the report, examine these details.

2. Create a script Link to 2. Create a script#

To create or import scripts, use the installed app or a paid cloud workspace.

Select New script on the dashboard, or press ⌘N. The arrow beside the button also offers a two-column AV script for commercials, explainers, and documentaries.

To use an existing draft, import a Final Draft (.fdx), Fountain, or text-based PDF file. Before you accept the import, examine the result. See Import & export.

Cloud scripts belong to a project inside your personal or team workspace. Local Mode keeps scripts on your device, without that setup (Sync & offline).

In the desktop and mobile apps, a new script opens immediately and saves on your device first, also when you are offline. With a paid plan, it then uploads to your private workspace automatically. A new script in a team project opens after the server creates it.

Find your scripts in the Library. Press ⌘N to create a script.

Select the star beside a script to make it a favorite. You can have up to five favorites. Favorites appear at the top of every Library page, in the order you added them, and still follow your search and production filters.

Cloud script favorites sync with your account. A local draft keeps its favorite on that device until the script uploads. Select the filled star to remove a favorite, also when you are offline. The account updates when you reconnect.

3. Start typing Link to 3. Start typing#

5. Share it Link to 5. Share it#

To invite your team during setup, select Writing team or Studio.

6. Select your craft Link to 6. Select your craft#

After sign-in, open Personalize your tools on your first Library visit to select your craft. This step is optional.

To select or change your craft, open Account → Your craft. Screencake shows tools for that work. Writers see story tools. Producers see schedules and budgets. Your craft does not restrict access.

You can open other tools through links or ⌘K → Show all tools.
