Beat board

Plan scenes with beat cards

Write ideas on cards. Arrange the cards into acts and connect them to scenes.

Cards Link to Cards#

Open File → Beat board for the current script.

  • If you clear all text from a card, the card is deleted. To write an idea, add and select a card.
  • Drag cards to reorder them, or focus a handle and press ↑/↓.
  • Select one of five colors. Select it again to clear the color.
  • To move cards into Act I, II, or III, drag them. You can also select a handle and press ←/→. New cards show in Beats.

To create a scene from a card, select its clapperboard button. Screencake adds a scene heading and the card text as action at the end of the script. The card stays on the board with a link to the scene.

To connect an existing scene, use the scene menu on the card. Its Sc. label opens the scene, including after edits or moves. Read-only collaborators can see the board. Only writers can change it.

The green chip links to the scene.

Reordering

Moving a card between acts does not change screenplay order.

Add a beat from the editor Link to Add a beat from the editor#

  1. Select ⌘K → Capture a beat, or More → Capture a beat on a phone.
  2. Write the idea and select Unfiled or an act.
  3. Add more ideas as necessary. Press Escape to return to the editor.

Each idea becomes a card without changes to the screenplay. Writers can use Capture, including offline.

Linked scenes Link to Linked scenes#

  • Written: beats linked to an existing scene. Each act shows its count.
  • Unwritten only: shows the beats without a scene.
  • Cut scene: the linked scene was removed. Connect the card to a different scene as necessary.
  • Unbeated: a scene-filter chip for scenes with no linked card. Linked scenes show a beat count in the navigator.

Planning on the board does not change pagination or exports. For sync details, see Sync & offline.
